Okay, so you may be wondering “How come this guy is an Honorary Newfoundlander”.
I have Francis and Stella Hull and their friends in Springdale, NFLD to thank for that.
The so-called “achievements” which qualified me for such an auspicious title are mainly lost in the mists of time, helped in no small part I am sure by the copious amounts of vodka which were consumed on that night nearly 10 years ago.
The only thing I do recall is that once I could actually say the word “Newfoundlander” with the correct intonation and syllabic stress my initiation by Francis and his three friends was assured. The ceremony was simple and took place in the Hull’s living room in front of their cat and dog.
I had the great pleasure to stay at the Hull’s B&B on numerous occasions during the two holidays I took to Newfoundland and Labrador back in the late 90’s. The second year I think we said “Goodbye” to each other at least five times, the last two occasions being within minutes of each other because I had left a rucksack sitting on their porch step. The last words the Hulls ever said to me in real life (without the aid of electronics) whilst waving me away were “Goodbye then…. see you in a couple of minutes !”
Unfortunately most of the pictures I took on those trips are either on my old, knackered laptop or normal photographs, and all of them are currently enjoying the dubious pleasure of residing with my ex back in Wales. As she turned out to be as mad as a box of frogs my chances of ever reclaiming the things I still hold dear which are in her posession seem minimal, but hope springs eternal. I guess I’ll have to try to get back to Springdale one day, before the Hulls move to Corner Brook, but finances ain’t what they used to be… 😦
Actually, just getting back to anywhere on “The Rock” would be wonderful. I love the place, I love the people… even those whose accents are so broad I wonder if we’re even speaking in the same tongue ! If I could be there tomorrow I would drop everything and go.
The Newfoundlanders are a special, warm and generous of spirit breed, and their self-effacing sense of humour has me rolling around the floor.
My blog may not be about Newfoundland, but it is dedicated to Francis and Stella, Rick and Joan Adams and their family (Springdale Aviation), Shawn o’Keefe from Placentia, the staff at “The Guvnor” in St. Johns, and all the other wonderful people of “The Rock” who made me feel so welcome.
God, I miss you guys !
